How a ‘Big Brother’ Connection Helped Ari Find Confidence Again

What Real Neurodivergent Teen Mentoring Support Looks Like

Finding the right neurodivergent teen mentoring support can feel impossible — until something finally clicks.

Most services will talk about plans, goals, routines…
But what many parents are really looking for is simpler and harder to find:

Someone who gets their young person.
 Someone who cares.
 Someone who feels real.

That’s what Mel was hoping for when she reached out to Kickstart.

“We tried everything… but nothing felt genuine.”

Mel and her son Ari had been through a lot of different services. On paper, they looked good. But something was always missing.

In her words:

“We’d tried lots of different services similar to Kickstart. Ari wanted support and he needed guidance and mentoring, but we always found that it was very structured… not genuine.”

The people showed up. They followed the plan.
But Ari didn’t feel any connection. And without that, nothing really changed.

Mel wasn’t looking for another checklist.
She was looking for someone who would show up for Ari not because it was their job, but because they wanted to.

“The minute he met the boys… it felt like they genuinely liked him.”

Everything shifted the day Ari met the Kickstart mentors.

Mel remembers it clearly:

“The minute he met the boys, it felt like they genuinely liked Ari. They genuinely wanted to spend time with him. It didn’t feel forced.”

For a young person who’d always resisted support, this was a big deal.

Ari didn’t just show up; he wanted to be there.

And for the first time, support felt like a connection.
 Not therapy.
 Not behaviour management.
Just people who saw him, enjoyed being around him, and let him be himself.

Confidence. Self-worth. A sense of self.

Over the following months, Mel started noticing real changes.

Ari was trying new things.
He was taking small steps on his own.
He started showing up for himself in ways she hadn’t seen before.

Mel puts it simply:

Ari’s learning confidence. He’s building self-esteem. He’s building that self-worth.”

It didn’t happen overnight.
It happened slowly and naturally because Ari felt safe to grow in his own way, at his own pace.

“What I appreciate most is that I have a relationship with them too.”

The connection wasn’t just between Ari and the mentors.
 Mel felt it too.

For once, she didn’t feel like the outsider, or just “the parent” who gets left out of updates.

“They really listen to me. They provide open, honest feedback. I can do the same with them. We know week to week what we’re trying to achieve, but we’re doing it in our own time.”

She felt included. Heard. Respected.
That kind of partnership is rare.

Kickstart didn’t just support Ari they supported Mel too.

They understood the pressure she was under, and they made sure she didn’t feel like she had to manage it all alone anymore.

“If you’ve tried other services… don’t hesitate to give Kickstart a go.”

After 12 months with Kickstart, Mel’s message to other parents is simple:

“If you have tried many other services before, don’t hesitate to give Kickstart a go. These boys lead with their heart, and they really want to see a difference in you, your family, and your kid.”

This is what makes Kickstart different.

Not complex programs.
 Not clinical sessions.
Just real relationships, consistent mentors, and people who truly care.
